Madrid, December 18, 2012. HM Hospitals recently participated with other hospitals in organizing the Course of Surgery Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic sponsored by the Spanish Association of Surgeons and intended for residents of 4th and 5th year. The initiative has been developed in five days in which are grouped patients with rare diseases in order to perform various interventions, although talks on interventional radiology and diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, among other techniques were also given.

Doctors Vicente Emilio and Yolanda Quijano, responsible for the Department of General Surgery and Digestive HM University Sanchinarro, the only Spanish private hospital that developed this teaching in the area of hepato-biliary-pancreática- surgery, explained that the goal of this course It is "to consolidate the training of doctors 4th and 5th year from different Spanish hospitals in this field".

During the five days that lasted the course students have received theoretical and practical training. "The theoretical aspect involved the incorporation of medical assistants to all educational activities that take place daily in our service, many in collaboration with other areas of the hospital as Clinical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Pathology, Gastroenterology, etc. "state the responsible service.
"From a practical standpoint, a varied program with surgical procedures were carried out simultaneously in four different operating rooms planned. This has allowed residents to attend even participate in unusual surgeries such as pancreatic resections with arterial and venous resection associated, some with microsurgical reconstruction or pancreatic cephalic resection with robotic support that represented the third such procedure effected in Spain and the second in our hospital, among others, "they write.

During the course, medical residents also had the opportunity to attend surgeries other areas with a "marked innovative character, such as debulking with intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy, as well as different techniques in patients with gastric tumor processes rectal or made with robotic support, "say the experts.
In fact, Dr. Quijano ensures that future challenges in this area of medicine will be associated with the existing technology and to develop in the coming years. In this regard, he said that "the concept of minimally invasive surgery will reach a greater dimension in the hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgical approach" and stressed that "it is a field in which HM Hospital has achieved a great experience in a short period time, exceeding one hundred robotic procedures. "

Future editions of the course

Given the success they have had the conference, it is expected that next year again participate HM hospitals in the course of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery. At first four places they were set up to do it, but eventually doubled due to the many requests that I had to attend. Dr. Vicente recalls that "the group's interest has always been to open doors to different professionals interested in learning its organizational model and its inner workings. We are keen to show the uniqueness of our project, which may well be exportable and reproducible, provided it takes place in a hospital setting where the right conditions exist. "
An interest that has been expressed in person, with the "Classroom of Surgery", as virtually, with the "Surgery Forum" application, which also have an innovative character in surgical training continued, has a global reach.

Dr. Vicente concludes recognizing his "satisfaction for having joined an official teaching that enriches taking place in our service to domestic and foreign visitors who come annually rotating to continue its process of formation."
